Utah Governor Cox Pens Book on Unity Amidst Political Division

Utah Governor Spencer Cox has made it clear that he is not seeking the presidency, but his latest endeavor aims to bridge the widening gap of political division in the United States. With his debut book, "Off Ramp: How to Be a Peacemaker in an Age of Contempt," Cox embarks on a mission to foster a sense of community by promoting better ways of disagreeing.

Governor Cox, in an interview with the Deseret News, acknowledged the challenge ahead. "I don't pretend that anything I say, or a book, is going to completely change the course of history or the polarization that's happening here," he said. "But what I hope will happen is that people will give it a chance."

Scheduled for release on September 8 by Penguin Press, "Off Ramp" is a concise, less than 250-page tome that merges Cox's personal experiences, governing philosophy, and a roadmap for depolarization. The book delves into several significant events of Cox's tenure, including the tragic assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in September 2025.

The Kirk shooting, which Cox described as a "powder keg" moment, became a pivotal moment in his advocacy for political deescalation. Following the incident, Cox urged Americans to seek alternatives to violence. His book, which was already in the works, quickly evolved into a continuation of that plea.

One of the book's most poignant episodes is Cox's firsthand account of learning about Kirk's death. He recounts the chaos following the shooting, the rapid succession of false reports, and his conversations with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump.

Governor Cox also reflects on the example set by Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's sister, praising her grace and poise in the face of tragedy. This event, among others, underscores the governor's belief that a nation's character is being tested by a screen-driven epidemic of loneliness.

In "Off Ramp," Cox argues that the key to fostering community lies in improving the way we engage in political discourse. He acknowledges the complexity of the issue but remains hopeful that his book can contribute to a more civil national conversation.

The book is not just a reflection of Cox's own beliefs; it is also a collection of stories and insights that aim to resonate with readers across the political spectrum. It includes anecdotes from his time in office, both the best and the worst moments, offering a glimpse into the life of a governor navigating the tumultuous waters of modern politics.

"Off Ramp" is a testament to Cox's commitment to unity and peace in an era defined by division and animosity. While acknowledging the challenges ahead, he remains steadfast in his belief that constructive dialogue and understanding can lead to meaningful change.

As the book prepares for its release, Governor Cox hopes that it will spark a dialogue that extends beyond the pages. "I don't expect this book to solve all the problems," he said. "But I do hope it starts a conversation that can help us all move forward."

The release of "Off Ramp" comes at a time when the United States is grappling with profound social and political divisions. Cox's book offers a hopeful vision of a nation that can come together, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.
