Unsolved 1992 Slaying of Logan Airport Worker Susan Taraskiewicz Remains Under Active Investigation

More than three decades after the brutal killing of Susan Taraskiewicz, investigators and grieving family members are making it clear that the passage of time has not diminished the search for justice. Although thirty-four years have passed since the young Saugus woman was killed, detectives emphasize that the inquiry remains an ongoing, highly targeted pursuit rather than a forgotten file.

Taraskiewicz, affectionately known to family and close companions as "Su," was just 27 years old when her life was violently cut short in 1992. At the time of her death, she was employed as a baggage handler at Logan International Airport, navigating a demanding work environment while building her future in Massachusetts.

Her sudden disappearance unfolded during what should have been an ordinary shift at the airport terminal. During her working hours, Taraskiewicz briefly stepped away from her post with the intention of picking up lunch for her colleagues, but she never arrived back at the facility to deliver the food or finish her duties.

The concerning disappearance quickly turned into a homicide investigation the following morning. Authorities discovered Taraskiewicz's own automobile parked in the neighboring city of Revere, where a closer inspection revealed her body concealed inside the vehicle's trunk. Forensic findings confirmed she had suffered fatal blunt-force trauma and severe stab wounds.

In the thirty-four years that have elapsed since that horrific discovery, the identity of the person or persons responsible has remained officially unresolved. No suspect has ever been formally indicted or held criminally liable in court, leaving relatives to endure decades without legal resolution or definitive answers.

Over the weekend, relatives, friends, and former law enforcement officers gathered to ensure that Taraskiewicz’s legacy is not overshadowed by the unresolved crime. A memorial vigil was hosted along the shoreline at Constitution Beach in East Boston, an emotionally significant location situated directly across the water from the airport where she worked her final shift.

During the gathering, her mother, Marlene Taraskiewicz, reflected on her daughter's warm and engaging personality. She noted that Susan had a memorable presence that left an immediate, positive mark on those she met, recalling that anyone who crossed paths with her inevitably wished to see and talk with her again.

Her sister, Debbie Alimonti, spoke about the profound generational impact of the loss, expressing the enduring pain of carrying decades of grief. She emphasized how the family has spent thirty-four long years imagining the personal milestones, careers, and life experiences that Susan was unjustly prevented from having.

Despite the significant amount of time that has elapsed since 1992, veteran law enforcement officials insist that the case has not grown cold. Bob Murphy, who served as the primary lead investigator on the murder inquiry for two decades, addressed attendees at the vigil to clarify the current status of the probe.

Murphy stated with absolute certainty that authorities do not view the homicide as an abandoned or stagnant matter. He explained that current detectives are maintaining an extremely active operational stance, emphasizing that ongoing efforts are guided by a very distinct, specific investigative focus.

The former lead detective underscored the vital role that the public continues to play in moving the case toward a resolution. Murphy pointed out that even a seemingly minor detail or long-held secret could serve as the crucial piece of evidence required to propel the investigation into its next phase and secure criminal charges.

Investigators over the years have explored multiple dynamics surrounding Taraskiewicz’s workplace environment at the airport. Reports indicated that she had been subjected to harassment by male coworkers leading up to the period of her disappearance.

Additionally, background investigations into airport personnel uncovered that some of her coworkers were implicated and arrested in connection with an illegal credit card theft ring. Marlene Taraskiewicz has long maintained that this criminal enterprise among coworkers might have been directly linked to the circumstances surrounding her daughter's murder.

To generate new leads and incentivize individuals with firsthand knowledge to break their silence, authorities continue to publicize a substantial financial incentive. A cash reward of $250,000 remains available for any credible information that directly leads law enforcement to an arrest and successful prosecution.

Marlene Taraskiewicz made an impassioned plea to anyone possessing information regarding the 1992 slaying, urging them to put aside their hesitation. Acknowledging that fear may have prevented people from speaking up over the past three decades, she reminded the community that tips and crucial evidence can be submitted entirely anonymously to protect the identity of informants.

State authorities are urging anyone who may hold knowledge regarding the events of that day, the workplace environment, or the individuals responsible for the homicide to step forward. Individuals with information are asked to contact the Massachusetts State Police directly at 617-272-8817.
