TxDOT Announces Extensive Overnight Lane Closures Across Interstate 35 and Central Texas Corridors

Motorists traveling through Central Texas are being advised to brace for substantial travel delays as state transportation crews initiate a series of extensive nighttime lane closures along Interstate 35. The scheduled roadwork, organized by the Texas Department of Transportation, is designed to accommodate critical infrastructure improvements and maintenance across several high-traffic stretches of the highway network beginning on Sunday, September 13.

Transportation officials emphasize that these operations will significantly alter traffic patterns during late-night and early-morning hours throughout the workweek. Drivers who regularly navigate the corridor are strongly encouraged to account for extra travel time, familiarize themselves with planned detours, and exercise heightened caution when passing through designated work zones.

The first major zone of disruption spans a substantial southern segment of Interstate 35, encompassing both the northbound and southbound mainlanes between Oltorf Street and State Highway 45 Southeast. This expansive stretch serves as a vital artery for regional transit and long-distance freight, making the planned maintenance a significant logistical undertaking for the area.

According to schedules published by transportation authorities, the nightly lane reductions along this southern section will take effect each evening at 8:00 p.m. and will remain in place until 5:00 a.m. the following morning. The recurring nightly operations are scheduled to proceed from Sunday evening through the morning of Thursday, September 17, providing a defined window for crews to complete their assignments.

In public updates shared on social platform X, the department clarified that the overnight work between Oltorf Street and SH 45 SE is centered on road surface paving operations and the installation of protective barriers. These roadway enhancements are intended to maintain pavement integrity and bolster safety standards along the heavily traveled interstate route.

To facilitate these construction activities, highway capacity will be sharply constrained. Portions of Interstate 35 within this southern work zone will be reduced to a single functional travel lane, creating significant bottlenecks during operational hours. Furthermore, crews will temporarily shut down multiple entrance and exit ramps, preventing standard access along affected segments and requiring drivers to identify alternative merge points.

Simultaneously, a second key project area will impact central mobility further north along the Interstate 35 corridor. Transportation crews are implementing complementary nightly closures on both the northbound and southbound mainlanes between Airport Boulevard and 12th Street, affecting another heavily utilized segment of the Austin-area highway system.

The operational timetable for the Airport Boulevard to 12th Street segment mirrors that of the southern project, with work crews restricting lanes from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. nightly, starting Sunday and concluding on Thursday. Because this sector handles considerable urban traffic, the lane reductions are expected to cause noticeable slowdowns even during off-peak hours.

In addition to the mainlane closures, secondary road infrastructure within the central project zone will face disruptions. The Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard bridge will be subject to temporary closures, and both northbound and southbound frontage roads in the vicinity will experience varying lane restrictions throughout the five-night construction window.

Beyond the interstate mainlanes, state transportation officials have also scheduled street-level construction on adjacent local roadways. A dedicated closure will take place along Cesar Chavez Street, impacting the segment situated between Springdale Road and Brushy Street.

The work on Cesar Chavez Street will operate on a slightly different overnight schedule, running from 7:00 p.m. in the evening to 6:00 a.m. each morning, beginning Monday and continuing through Thursday. State officials noted that this municipal roadway closure is required to accommodate essential utility work along the corridor.

The simultaneous execution of multiple construction projects highlights the ongoing infrastructure demands across the rapidly growing Central Texas region. With highway lanes, frontage roads, overpasses, and arterial streets simultaneously constrained, the cumulative impact on overnight freight movement, rideshare operators, and late-shift commuters will be substantial.

Transportation planners recommend that travelers monitor live traffic conditions and explore alternate bypass routes before setting out during the designated maintenance windows. Drivers are also reminded to reduce their speed, remain alert for construction equipment and roadside personnel, and obey all posted temporary detour signs throughout the affected construction zones.

As work commences on September 13, TxDOT expects the nightly closures across Interstate 35 and Cesar Chavez Street to conclude as planned on Thursday, provided that weather conditions and field operations remain on schedule throughout the week.
