Texas GOP Railroad Commissioner Nominee Bo French Sparks Intraparty Backlash Over Social Media Remarks

A celebratory scene at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin quickly transformed into a statewide political flashpoint after Bo French, the Republican nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner, published contentious social media posts targeting students in the crowd. The controversy erupted shortly after the Texas Longhorns capped off a comeback win against the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in a high-profile college football matchup.

While thousands of spectators celebrated the Longhorns' home victory late in the fourth quarter and following the final whistle, French watched the game remotely on television. Early Sunday morning, the candidate took to social media to share an image of fans celebrating in the stands, focusing specifically on a cluster of students who appeared to be of South Asian descent.

Accompanying the stadium image, French voiced his displeasure regarding the demographics of the crowd. He wrote that he had previously heard descriptions regarding the demographic makeup of this year's University of Texas graduation ceremony but had initially doubted those accounts, adding that the issue was now clearly much worse than anyone had anticipated.

French expanded on his viewpoint in the comments section of the post, directly addressing university admissions policies. He asserted that individuals who look like the students featured in the photograph are being favored by administrators, claiming that higher education institutions are prioritizing foreigners over Texas residents during the selection process.

Roughly an hour after his initial post, French doubled down on his assertions by sharing the exact same stadium photograph a second time. In this follow-up publication, he drew a comparison between modern digital platforms and law enforcement surveillance equipment to underscore his perspective on demographic change.

In that subsequent post, French stated that just as police body cameras function to expose criminal behavior, social media is now exposing the degree to which American citizens are allegedly being displaced by foreign nationals. He asserted to his followers that the phenomenon is unfolding everywhere and remains far more extensive than the public realizes.

The incident marks the latest in a series of controversial episodes involving French, who previously served as the chairman of the Tarrant County Republican Party. Over the course of his campaign, the statewide nominee has drawn frequent criticism for making anti-Indian statements and deploying xenophobic rhetoric.

Earlier in March, French ignited significant pushback from fellow party members following remarks he delivered regarding religion and demographics. At the time, he claimed that Islam represents a growing problem designed to infiltrate and ultimately conquer the state of Texas, while going on to call for the deportation of American Muslims.

Those prior comments had generated substantial pushback from various Texas Republicans, and his latest social media statements about the football game immediately provoked sharp rebukes from prominent state and federal officeholders within his own party.

Outgoing U.S. Sen. John Cornyn led the intraparty condemnation on Sunday, publishing a pointed rebuke on the social media platform X. Cornyn drew attention to French's position on the statewide ballot and challenged other party figures to take an explicit stand against the rhetoric.

In his post, Cornyn questioned whether other elected Republican officials would openly condemn what he described as intolerance and racism, or whether they would look the other way while such views become normalized. Cornyn concluded his critique by warning that embracing such sentiment is how major political parties self-destruct.

The candidate's statements also met swift resistance from leadership within the Texas House of Representatives. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows publicly called on French to delete the controversial photograph and commentary from his social media profile.

Speaker Burrows was joined in his demand by other Republican members of the state legislature, including state Rep. Jeff Leach and state Rep. Lacey Hull, both of whom echoed the call for French to take down the online post immediately.

Despite the growing chorus of criticism from state leaders and a senior member of the United States Senate, French showed no intention of retracting his statements or removing the images from his social media accounts.

Instead, French responded aggressively to Cornyn's public criticism with a follow-up message on X. In his rebuttal, French accused Cornyn of being a "RINO"—an acronym for Republican in Name Only—and claimed that Texas institutions have been overrun by illegal aliens and foreign nationals because politicians like Cornyn have prioritized them over American citizens.

French concluded his response by dismissing his Republican critics as "America Last losers," asserting that detractors inside the party are simply upset because Texas conservatives are increasingly embracing an America First approach.
