Authorities in Rockland County have taken a 22-year-old local resident into custody following a swift law enforcement operation sparked by an armed bank robbery in Nanuet over the weekend. The incident, which unfolded during standard morning business hours, triggered a rapid multi-unit police response across nearby commercial properties before concluding with a formal arrest.
According to official reports released by the Clarkstown Police Department, the suspect has been identified as James L. Gordon of Nanuet. Gordon is alleged to have carried out the daytime robbery at a local retail branch, prompting immediate emergency calls from bank staff and an extensive ground search by municipal patrol units.
The incident took place on Saturday morning at approximately 11:00 a.m. when Gordon reportedly entered the Chase Bank branch located at 61 Smith Street in Nanuet. The suburban financial institution was open for regular weekend service when the suspect walked through the front doors and directly approached one of the interior teller counters.
Upon reaching the service window, Gordon allegedly confronted an on-duty bank employee, stating that he was armed with a firearm. Operating under the direct threat of violence, the individual demanded that the bank teller immediately hand over an undisclosed amount of cash from the counter drawers.
The entire encounter inside the financial establishment transpired within a matter of moments. Immediately after obtaining currency from the teller station, the suspect turned away from the counter and fled the bank premises on foot at approximately 11:01 a.m., disappearing into the surrounding neighborhood before local patrol cars could arrive.
Clarkstown police officers were dispatched to the Smith Street address in response to emergency alarms and calls from the branch. Responding law enforcement units arrived at the scene by roughly 11:05 a.m., establishing a secure perimeter around the building, checking on the welfare of bank personnel, and collecting initial witness statements.
Armed with a detailed physical description provided by the branch staff, multiple patrol officers immediately initiated an active canvas of the commercial and retail corridors adjacent to the bank. The operational focus centered along the busy shopping thoroughfares where a fleeing suspect on foot might seek concealment among local storefronts.
Roughly twenty minutes after initiating the neighborhood search, an alert Clarkstown police officer spotted an individual who closely matched the broadcast description of the bank robbery suspect. The individual was observed maneuvering in the rear area of a retail center located at 122 Route 59.
The location where the suspect was spotted corresponds to the property occupied by the Ocean State Job Lot retail store, situated along one of the primary commercial arteries in the town. Officers moved in swiftly to detain the man without further public disruption, officially confirming his identity as Gordon.
Following his apprehension behind the Route 59 commercial plaza, Gordon was formally placed under arrest by the Clarkstown Police Department and transported to police headquarters for administrative processing, formal identification, and official booking procedures.
Police subsequently filed multiple criminal complaints against Gordon in connection with the morning robbery. The primary charge leveled against the 22-year-old is first-degree robbery, a severe felony classification that reflects the alleged verbal claim of carrying a deadly firearm during the commission of the bank heist.
In addition to the top robbery count, authorities have charged Gordon with grand larceny in the fourth degree, which pertains to the unlawful taking of bank funds, as well as menacing in the third degree, relating to the fear and intimidation inflicted upon the bank teller during the encounter.
Following the completion of booking procedures at police headquarters, Gordon was escorted to Clarkstown Justice Court for his initial arraignment before a presiding judge. During the court appearance, the formal charges were read on the record, and the conditions of his pretrial custody were officially determined.
The presiding justice ordered Gordon remanded to the Rockland County Jail in lieu of bail, setting financial conditions at $50,000 cash or a $100,000 bond. The defendant remained in county custody pending future court appearances and upcoming grand jury action regarding the felony allegations.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that all formal charges filed against Gordon remain allegations at this stage of the criminal justice process. As provided by statutory law and constitutional protections, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
