Commuters traveling through downtown Louisville are facing major route adjustments as a crucial segment of Broadway directly underneath Interstate 65 has been completely closed to vehicular traffic. The shutdown, which began in mid-September, is expected to remain in place through at least early October, forcing thousands of local workers and daily drivers to navigate designated detours to reach their workplaces and destinations.
Representatives with the I-65 Central Corridor Project confirmed that the temporary closure is required so construction crews can safely demolish the existing interstate overpass spanning Broadway. Demolition activities overhead create hazardous conditions, making it essential to block off the roadway below until the structure is completely removed.
Broadway is not the only corridor affected by the ongoing structural work in the downtown area. Project coordinators announced that the section of Gray Street situated beneath Interstate 65 has also been shut down to motor vehicle traffic through early October. However, officials noted that pedestrian passage along Gray Street is being maintained during this construction phase to allow foot traffic to move safely through the area.
To assist drivers in circumventing the Broadway construction zone, transportation authorities have established and signposted specific detour paths. Westbound travelers moving along Broadway must begin their detour at South Preston Street, where they are instructed to turn south and proceed to East Breckinridge Street. From there, motorists travel west along East Breckinridge until reaching South Second Street, which directs them north back toward Broadway to continue their regular journey.
For drivers traveling in the opposite direction, the eastbound Broadway detour starts at South First Street. Motorists must head south on First Street until they reach East College Street, make a turn onto College, and then travel north along East Brook Street. Once drivers reach the northern end of Brook Street, they can merge back onto Broadway and proceed eastward.
In addition to the local surface street closures, Interstate 65 itself is experiencing temporary disruptions during nighttime hours. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced a series of scheduled lane restrictions along the highway between Jacob Street and Floyd Street. These highway lane reductions are scheduled to take place from 9 p.m. in the evening until 6 a.m. the following morning, running from September 13 through September 18.
Maintaining clear routes to downtown healthcare infrastructure has been a primary concern throughout the planning of the construction project. Transportation officials have assured the public that emergency vehicles, patients, and visitors will continue to have uninterrupted access to downtown medical facilities despite the simultaneous closures on both Broadway and Gray Street.
Specific navigation guidelines have been issued for motorists utilizing the interstate who are not visiting healthcare centers. Drivers exiting northbound Interstate 65 at the Broadway exit ramp without destinations in the downtown medical district are instructed to turn right onto Broadway and proceed northward into the city center by utilizing Clay Street.
Construction leaders have emphasized the importance of keeping roads surrounding hospitals clear of unnecessary traffic. In an official project statement, authorities explicitly advised motorists heading to areas outside the downtown medical hub to seek alternative routes and avoid traversing nearby segments of Brook Street, Floyd Street, and Chestnut Street during this construction phase.
The Broadway closure was initially scheduled to start earlier in the season on August 26. However, state transportation officials chose to postpone the shutdown after significant traffic congestion emerged in the surrounding area, largely driven by existing closures on Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Brook Street. The project team used the delay to refine detour configurations and improve local traffic patterns before closing Broadway.
Despite the schedule adjustment for Broadway, the long-term street closures on Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Brook Street remain actively in effect. Traffic engineers modified the surrounding detour arrangements to better handle vehicle distribution while these key downtown arteries continue to undergo long-term reconstruction.
The demolition of the Broadway overpass represents one piece of a broader, multi-year infrastructure overhaul across Louisville. State infrastructure plans call for the total replacement of six overpasses in the metropolitan corridor, with ongoing bridge work scheduled to continue through 2027.
While previous construction phases caused widespread disruption—including a comprehensive shutdown of a five-mile stretch of Interstate 65 for approximately two months during the summer of 2026—officials have clarified that no complete closures of the I-65 corridor are planned for this phase of the bridge demolition work.
Future highway projects will still bring substantial travel impacts to the region in the coming years. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced on September 10 that a one-mile segment of Interstate 65 located near downtown Louisville will be narrowed to a single lane of traffic starting around May 2027, with the restriction projected to last through late 2028.
As infrastructure improvements continue across the downtown grid, transportation officials encourage all commuters to plan their travel times in advance, follow the posted detour signs closely, and remain alert to ongoing shifts in traffic patterns throughout the central corridor.
