In a unified effort to highlight an often overlooked basic necessity, Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan officially proclaimed September 15 as Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day throughout the city. The municipal declaration served to spotlight the thousands of local residents who struggle daily without dependable access to proper attire, bringing together civic leadership, charitable organizations, and corporate volunteers to address the widespread issue.

To mark the designated day of awareness, Presbyterian Social Ministries, Inc. mobilized a dedicated team of employee volunteers from the Community First Credit Union Kindness Crew. Working on the front lines of community service, these volunteers gathered at the nonprofit’s central Murray Hill warehouse facility to process, organize, and sort large volumes of donated apparel designated for distribution across the region.

The citywide observance brought urgent attention to clothing insecurity, a pervasive hardship that impacts a wide demographic across Northeast Florida. Community advocates emphasize that the lack of adequate garments creates severe daily obstacles for school-aged children, senior citizens, military veterans, and individuals navigating homelessness or unexpected personal crises.

At the core of the organization's outreach is the Clothing with Purpose initiative, a specialized program operated by Presbyterian Social Ministries. Through this logistical framework, the nonprofit supplies clean, essential garments completely free of charge to a network of more than 100 partner organizations across the region, creating a reliable pipeline of basic goods for established service providers.

Organizers stress that the provision of adequate attire is fundamentally linked to broader social and economic mobility. By securing appropriate clothing, recipients are empowered to attend school regularly, pursue and maintain gainful employment, protect their personal health, and preserve a vital sense of dignity and self-worth during challenging times.

Established in 2004 and operating in close affiliation with the Presbytery of St. Augustine, Presbyterian Social Ministries has long managed a broad array of supportive community services. In addition to its clothing distribution operations, the organization manages initiatives such as Home Safe, a targeted supportive housing program that currently assists 60 chronically homeless families as they work toward long-term stability.

The operational scale of the Clothing with Purpose program saw substantial growth throughout 2025. Over the course of that operational year, the organization successfully processed and distributed 218,497 individual articles of clothing, providing critical assistance to 31,214 men, women, and children across Northeast Florida through its extensive partner agency network.

Alongside its humanitarian mission, the program achieved significant environmental milestones during the same timeframe. By implementing dedicated textile reclamation practices, the organization recycled 22,414 pounds of fabric materials in 2025, effectively preventing approximately 10 tons of unusable textiles from ending up in local landfills.

Neil Claasen, director of logistics at Presbyterian Social Ministries, outlined the critical importance of maintaining a sophisticated regional warehouse operation to support community partners. He noted that while clothing represents one of the most foundational human needs, successfully delivering it to the most vulnerable individuals requires a comprehensive operational infrastructure that extends far beyond merely gathering donated goods.

Claasen explained that the Clothing with Purpose program handles the complex tasks of warehousing, quality assurance, inventory management, and regional distribution. By managing these logistical hurdles, the initiative ensures that partner nonprofits maintain a consistent source of quality attire, freeing those agencies to concentrate their own time and financial resources directly on their core missions while outfitting clients with items that restore confidence and foster progress.

The steady supply of inventory is bolstered through high-volume corporate contributions of both brand-new and gently used garments from recognized national and regional brands. Key retail and manufacturing partners supporting the mission include Victoria's Secret, Bombas, Natural Life, SanMar, and Kid to Kid, all of which provide vital inventory to sustain the regional warehouse.

Presbyterian Social Ministries Chief Executive Officer Teri Ketchum underscored that clean, fitting clothing is just as essential to human survival as food and shelter. Ketchum reflected on the organization's faith-based mission to bridge the gap between abundance and community need, pointing out that individuals cannot fully participate in modern society or access essential opportunities without weather-appropriate and well-fitting garments.

Ketchum also voiced deep appreciation for the network of community supporters who keep the logistics network operational. She emphasized that the ongoing investments of time and funding from dedicated individual volunteers, regional philanthropic foundations, and corporate allies—including the Community First Cares Foundation—remain indispensable to sustaining the Clothing with Purpose infrastructure and its partner charities.

The hands-on involvement of the Community First Credit Union workforce played a central role in driving the sorting operations at the Murray Hill facility. Sam Inman, president and CEO of Community First Credit Union, highlighted the institution's deep commitment to active civic participation, noting that awareness must always be paired with meaningful, compassionate community action.

Inman affirmed that the credit union's Kindness Crew volunteers remain eager to roll up their sleeves and provide direct labor in support of vulnerable neighbors. He concluded that collaborative initiatives like Clothing with Purpose are essential to guaranteeing that every resident across Northeast Florida has the basic clothing, dignity, and self-confidence required to move their lives forward.
