Wisconsin Congressman Tom Tiffany Swims to Safety Following Emergency Plane Landing in Lake Wausau

United States Representative Tom Tiffany narrowly escaped serious injury late Saturday evening after the light aircraft he was traveling in experienced an engine failure and was forced to perform an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau. The Republican lawmaker and the plane’s pilot both managed to escape the sinking aircraft and swim through the water to a shallower area before being retrieved by emergency rescue crews.

The harrowing incident occurred as Tiffany was traveling back from a political engagement in western Wisconsin, where he had attended the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner. The flight was nearing its final destination at the Wausau Downtown Airport when mechanical complications suddenly disrupted the approach, prompting an urgent response from the cockpit to bring the aircraft down safely.

According to accounts of the incident, the single-engine aircraft suffered a sudden loss of power just moments before it could line up with the airport’s runway. Faced with failing propulsion and rapidly decreasing altitude, the pilot initiated a forced landing onto the surface of nearby Lake Wausau to avoid residential structures and terrain on the approach path.

The impact with the water brought the flight to an abrupt halt, forcing the occupants to quickly assess their surroundings as water began to flood the cabin. With the aircraft rapidly losing buoyancy in the dark, Tiffany and the pilot took immediate steps to evacuate the cabin before the frame slipped beneath the surface of the lake.

Reflecting on the frightening ordeal in a public statement shared on the social media platform X, Tiffany described the rapid sequence of events that unfolded immediately following the touchdown. He explained that they managed to place an emergency call to 911 right after hitting the water, recognizing that time was critical as the fuselage began to sink.

Tiffany noted that as the aircraft started to submerge, both men exited into the open water and swam toward a shallow section of the lake. Once reaching relative footing in the shallows, they remained in place and awaited the arrival of local first responders who were dispatched to navigate the waters by rescue vessel.

According to a formal statement released by the Marathon County Sheriff's Office, emergency dispatchers logged the initial distress report shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Saturday. The pilot was officially identified by authorities as Leonard Boltz, who remained with the congressman throughout the evacuation and water rescue.

Emergency personnel mobilized rapidly to reach the coordinates provided by the distressed passengers. First responders operating a local fire department airboat arrived on the scene shortly after 9:00 p.m., successfully retrieving both Tiffany and Boltz from the water without further incident and transporting them back to shore.

Following their extraction from Lake Wausau, both men were transferred to a nearby medical facility to undergo evaluation and treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Medical staff treated both individuals for minor trauma sustained during the forced landing and the subsequent water evacuation before discharging them from the hospital.

Tiffany’s campaign confirmed the extent of his physical injuries in an emailed statement, noting that the congressman sustained a laceration above his right eye that required stitches to close. Despite the physical impact and the cold water swim, officials reported that both the lawmaker and Boltz were in stable condition upon release.

In the aftermath of the crash, local law enforcement moved quickly to secure the scene on the water. The Marathon County Sheriff's Office announced that a no-wake buoy was strategically anchored near the submerged wreckage to protect maritime traffic and preserve the integrity of the aircraft for recovery teams.

Authorities also issued an advisory urging recreational boaters and local watercraft operators to stay clear of the designated landing zone until salvage crews could complete the complex process of retrieving the plane from the bottom of Lake Wausau.

Federal aviation authorities were formally alerted to the incident over the weekend to begin the process of determining what triggered the sudden mechanical failure. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have taken up the case and will conduct a comprehensive joint investigation into the airframe and engine logs.

Official records confirm that the aircraft involved in the water landing was a single-engine, four-seat Bonanza model. The ongoing federal inquiry is expected to review maintenance records, weather conditions, and operational data to pinpoint why the aircraft lost total engine power during its final approach.

The dramatic survival comes during a pivotal political moment for Tiffany, who is currently running as a Republican candidate in the Wisconsin gubernatorial race. His bid for the state’s executive office has garnered substantial attention within the party, bolstered by a formal endorsement from Donald Trump.

The incident drew immediate reactions from across the political spectrum, including from Tiffany's Democratic opponent in the gubernatorial contest, David Crowley. Crowley took to social media to express relief over the safe outcome, wishing Tiffany a swift and full recovery from his injuries while praising the pilot’s decisive actions and heroism during the mid-air crisis.
