University of Southern Indiana Withholds Kevin O'Leary Speaking Fee for Upcoming AI Lecture

Officials at the University of Southern Indiana have declined to make public the exact amount being paid to television personality and investor Kevin O'Leary for an upcoming lecture on artificial intelligence. The university has justified the decision by asserting that revealing the financial terms of the contract would compromise protected commercial information under state open records regulations.

The controversy stems from an inquiry by the Evansville Courier & Press regarding the contractual obligations tied to O'Leary's scheduled campus appearance on September 23. In response to a formal public records request seeking an itemized account of all speaker fees and university-funded expenses, USI General Counsel Zach LaGrange provided only a heavily redacted addendum, arguing that disclosing the exact compensation would improperly expose proprietary commercial data.

According to the university's legal representation, contract pricing qualifies as protected under state statutes governing public records disclosures. LaGrange stated that pricing arrangements possess distinct economic value derived from their confidentiality, making them exempt from release. He also noted that specific details affecting the safety and security of the "Shark Tank" star were excised in accordance with the state's Access to Public Records Act.

Although the core speaker fee was blacked out in the documentation provided by the university, the released addendum outlines several ancillary costs that USI agreed to cover for the celebrity guest. The contract stipulates that the institution will pay a fixed travel buyout of $5,500 to address roundtrip airfare and all local ground transportation needs.

In addition to travel costs, the agreement commits the university to financing luxury accommodations for up to two nights. The document specifies that USI will provide lodging at a five-star or mutually acceptable hotel, comprising one suite and an additional standard room. The institution is also responsible for covering meals and incidental expenses for a party of two throughout the visit.

While the exact sum provided by USI remains hidden from the public record, industry benchmarks offer a clear window into what the appearance likely costs. The agreement disclosed by the university was executed on letterhead from All-American Entertainment, a prominent celebrity booking agency representing notable public figures such as Magic Johnson, Monica Lewinsky, Erin Brockovich, and Emmitt Smith.

According to publicly accessible fee schedules published on the agency's website, an in-person appearance by O'Leary typically commands between $100,000 and $200,000. That rate places the investor in the same pricing tier as 23-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, while remote, virtual engagements featuring O'Leary are listed at a lower range of $30,000 to $50,000.

The upcoming presentation, which is scheduled to be held at the campus's Liberty Arena, is being funded through the USI Foundation as a free event open to the public. Billed around the themes of artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and wealth generation, the evening is set to feature a formal talk followed by an audience question-and-answer session led by USI Associate Professor Nick Rhew.

The booking has drawn scrutiny amid community discussions regarding emerging technology and data infrastructure. In response to the backlash, USI spokesperson John Farless clarified the timeline of the engagement, stating that the university finalized the arrangement with O'Leary back in July 2025, well ahead of ongoing local debates over potential regional data centers.

Farless further defended the program by emphasizing the institution's commitment to exposing students and the community to diverse perspectives on business and technology. He noted that AI represents only a portion of the broad financial and entrepreneurial topics O'Leary plans to address, adding that hosting an individual speaker does not indicate that the university endorses their personal views or outside business ventures.

To support the decision to withhold the primary compensation figure, the university's legal counsel pointed directly to Indiana Code 5-14-3-4(a)(4). That statutory provision explicitly shields trade secrets and related confidential business records from mandatory disclosure when public entities face formal records requests.

State law under Indiana Code 24-2-3-2 defines a trade secret as information, methods, compilation, techniques, or processes that derive tangible or potential economic value from not being widely known to the public or competitors. LaGrange maintained that previous guidance issued by the state's Public Access Counselor confirms that contract figures fall under this legal standard because their value depends on remaining confidential.

However, historical records from the Indiana Public Access Counselor show that state oversight on trade secret exemptions has yielded varying interpretations over the years. In past advisory reviews, state oversight officials have sometimes upheld an agency's right to withhold pricing information, while in other instances concluding that public bodies applied overly broad interpretations of what constitutes a protected trade secret.

Despite the lack of transparency regarding the total expenditure, the university plans to proceed with the September event as scheduled. As public interest in high-profile campus speakers continues to intersect with state transparency laws, the dispute highlights ongoing debates over the boundary between public accountability and proprietary business agreements at state-supported institutions.
