UK Police Probe Whether Arrests Near US Air Base Thwarted Iran-Linked Plot

British counterterrorism detectives are investigating whether the arrest of five men near a U.S.-operated air force base in England foiled a planned attack with possible links to Iran, authorities said Monday.

The men were taken into custody early Sunday after three vans were reported near RAF Fairford, a U.K.-owned facility in Gloucestershire that has hosted American bombers through decades of Middle Eastern conflicts. Police are now examining suspected explosives discovered in connection with the vehicles.

According to police accounts, the arrests were set in motion by a late-night call from the public reporting "suspicious vehicles" close to the base. That detail contrasts with comments from President Donald Trump, who said the suspects had been detained through U.S.-British cooperation and had been "under view" for some time before the operation.

The five suspects, who have not been publicly identified, were initially held on suspicion of explosives offenses. They were subsequently also arrested on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism. Under British law, police may detain them for as long as 14 days before they must either be charged or released.

Investigators have not reached a conclusion about whether the incident amounts to a state-backed attack. Detectives are pursuing multiple possible angles, including ties to Iran, Russia, or non-state militant groups. The uncertainty reflects the early stage of the inquiry and the difficulty of attributing plots that emerge near sensitive military installations.

RAF Fairford has longstanding strategic importance for the United States. American bombers have operated from the base during conflicts spanning the Middle East, and it has also drawn attention as a site of protests by anti-war campaigners. That profile makes it a potential symbolic as well as practical target.

The disruption to local residents has been significant. Authorities evacuated 85 homes in the village of Whelford near the base on Sunday. Army bomb-disposal experts deployed a robot to inspect the three white vans, which had not been moved as of Monday morning. Villagers were still unable to return home, leaving families waiting for clearance as the security operation continued.

British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting declined to provide operational details but welcomed Trump's acknowledgment of British efforts. He described it as "a proud moment" that the president had recognized "the work that our police and intelligence services do every day." His comments underscored the close counterterrorism partnership between London and Washington, particularly at bases hosting U.S. forces.

The case also raises broader questions about the threat landscape facing military sites in Europe. Analysts have warned that state-linked actors and proxy groups have increasingly sought to test security at installations associated with Western military operations. Even an unsuccessful plot can expose vulnerabilities, prompt costly security reviews, and heighten tensions with foreign governments suspected of involvement.

For now, no formal link to any state or group has been established. Police have not named the suspects or disclosed what the suspected explosives were, nor have they confirmed whether the vans contained an operational device. The investigation remains at a stage where authorities are gathering forensic evidence and interviewing those detained.

The differing accounts of what triggered the arrests — a public tip versus pre-existing intelligence — may matter as the case develops. If the men had been monitored previously, questions will arise about why they were not intercepted earlier. If the call came from a member of the public, it will highlight the role of civilian vigilance in disrupting potential attacks near sensitive facilities.

British officials have stressed that the inquiry is ongoing and that speculation about motives is premature. Counterterrorism investigators typically weigh a range of scenarios before assigning attribution, particularly when an incident touches on international alliances. The involvement of U.S. assets at the base adds a diplomatic dimension to what is already a complex criminal investigation.

The five detainees can be held without charge for up to two weeks, giving detectives a limited window to build a case. During that period, forensic teams will analyze materials recovered from the vans, examine communications, and trace the movements of the suspects. Any decision to charge will depend on whether prosecutors believe there is sufficient evidence of a credible plan.

Residents of Whelford and surrounding communities face continued uncertainty. Road closures and a heavy police presence are likely to persist while bomb-disposal teams complete their work. Local authorities have not announced when evacuations might be lifted, and the vans remain at the center of the investigation.

The incident has also renewed scrutiny of security arrangements at RAF Fairford, which has been a focal point for both military activity and anti-war demonstrations. Balancing operational secrecy with public safety is a persistent challenge for base commanders and local police, who must coordinate closely during emergencies.

As the investigation unfolds, officials on both sides of the Atlantic will be watching closely. The outcome will shape understanding of the threat posed by foreign-linked networks operating in the U.K., and it may influence how Britain and the United States share intelligence and protect jointly used installations in the future.
