### Title: California Lawmakers Push for Enhanced Ballot Security and Transparency in Political Campaigns

In a move to ensure the integrity of this fall's midterm elections, California lawmakers have approved a series of bills aimed at bolstering ballot security and enhancing transparency in political campaigns. The bills are now awaiting the signature of Governor Gavin Newsom, as the state legislature approaches the conclusion of its two-year session.

Among the approved measures is a bill proposed by Assemblymember Marc Berman (D-Menlo Park), which mandates the disclosure of payments made to social media influencers by political campaigns. This follows the controversial rise of influencer endorsements in California's 2026 gubernatorial primary, where candidates like Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer spent thousands on paid posts. Berman's bill is designed to prevent voter misinformation by requiring full transparency on influencer posts and the reporting of social media spending by campaigns.

If signed into law, the provisions of Berman's bill could impose fines on influencers and campaigns that fail to disclose paid content. This comes at a time when the role of social media in shaping public opinion has never been more prominent, but also more contentious.

Separately, two bills target the interference with mail ballots and election materials. One, proposed by Assemblymember Gail Pellerin (D-Santa Cruz), would make it a felony to take or order the seizure of ballots, election records, or voting machines. The bill was introduced in response to concerns about interference in the democratic process, especially after a notable case in Riverside County where more than 650,000 ballots were seized by the county sheriff over unproven fraud claims.

The other bill, SB 259, specifically addresses the interference with mail ballots in transit. This comes amid concerns about the potential for interference during the November 3 election, where mail-in voting is expected to play a significant role.

Governor Newsom has already signed legislation to prevent law enforcement agencies from taking ballots without a warrant, showing his commitment to securing the voting process. Pellerin's bill goes a step further, making interference with ballots a criminal offense punishable by up to four years in prison.

These new measures reflect a broader national debate on the importance of ballot security and transparency in the face of increasing scrutiny on the integrity of elections. As the election season approaches, the implementation of these bills is expected to reinforce trust in the democratic process.

Despite some opposition from Republican lawmakers, who argue that ballot theft is already illegal, the proposed bills underscore the state's determination to safeguard the voting rights of its citizens. Lawmakers believe that the new measures are necessary to address the unprecedented challenges facing modern elections, including the potential for misinformation and interference.

Newsom has until September 30 to sign or veto the bills. The governor's decision will be closely watched, as it could have significant implications for the integrity of the upcoming midterm elections in California.

In addition to these legislative efforts, the bills also represent a broader push for accountability and transparency in the political sphere. The focus on influencer endorsements and the security of mail-in ballots reflects a growing awareness of the need to protect the democratic process from external threats.

The passage of these bills by California's legislature sends a strong message that the state is committed to ensuring fair and transparent elections. As the election season heats up, these new measures could play a crucial role in preserving the integrity of the democratic process.
