Three Dead in Chatsworth News Helicopter Crash Near Earlier Fatal Metro Bus Wreck

A tragic sequence of events unfolded in the San Fernando Valley on Tuesday evening when a television news helicopter crashed in a commercial district of Chatsworth, claiming three lives. The aircraft had been dispatched to provide aerial coverage of a deadly multi-vehicle collision involving a municipal bus that occurred nearby just hours earlier.

The fatal aviation incident took place shortly before 7 p.m. in the 9100 block of North Mason Avenue. According to emergency personnel from the Los Angeles Fire Department, the aircraft came down in a narrow space between two commercial structures, instantly erupting into flames upon impact and sending plumes of smoke over the surrounding neighborhood.

The resulting ground fire quickly spread to adjacent property, damaging four parked vehicles and two industrial storage containers before emergency crews were able to contain the blaze. Firefighters arriving at the scene confronted heavy fire conditions and extensive debris scattered across the commercial lot.

Fire suppression teams successfully knocked down the flames and immediately initiated a search of the charred wreckage. In addition to the three confirmed deaths associated with the aviation disaster, fire officials reported that one individual was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.

Addressing media representatives near the site, Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Branden Silverman described the catastrophic condition of the downed aircraft. Silverman explained that the airframe was virtually destroyed upon impact, complicating initial efforts by emergency responders to determine the precise number of occupants inside and identify the specific aircraft.

Station officials subsequently confirmed before 9 p.m. that the aircraft involved was NewsChopper4, which was operating on behalf of NBC4 and Telemundo 52. The helicopter was managed and operated by Angel City Air, an aviation contractor providing routine aerial news gathering and live broadcasting services for the local television stations.

Network management also verified that veteran aerial journalist Eliana Moreno was on board the helicopter when it went down. While Moreno was confirmed as a passenger, investigators noted that establishing a complete manifest remained difficult in the immediate aftermath of the crash. Capt. Silverman indicated to reporters that one of the victims was discovered outside the aircraft fuselage, leaving the precise onboard configuration subject to ongoing verification.

The aviation catastrophe occurred approximately two hours after another major emergency drew significant first-responder and media attention to the Chatsworth area. Shortly after 5 p.m., a severe traffic collision occurred at the intersection of West Nordhoff Street and De Soto Avenue when a passenger vehicle crashed into the side of a Los Angeles Metro bus.

The violent intersection crash caused severe structural damage to the transit vehicle, trapping multiple passengers inside the wreckage. Firefighters mounted an intensive rescue operation, extricating trapped riders and coordinating the emergency transport of six injured people to nearby medical centers for urgent care.

The transit collision resulted in multiple fatalities of its own. While preliminary assessments at the scene indicated at least two people had died in the roadway crash, Metro officials later confirmed to CBS Los Angeles that the death toll from the bus collision had reached three.

Due to the severity and breaking nature of the bus accident, several local broadcast stations had deployed news helicopters into the airspace over Chatsworth to provide live overhead views of the rescue operation. It was during this active newsgathering period that NewsChopper4 suffered its catastrophic descent only a short distance away from the primary crash scene.

Following confirmation of the aircraft's loss, NBC4 and Telemundo 52 released a joint statement mourning the tragedy. The stations conveyed profound grief over the fatal accident involving their aerial crew, offering heartfelt condolences to the families, close friends, and station colleagues of everyone who died in the disaster.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass arrived at the scene Tuesday night to participate in a press briefing and express the city's collective mourning. Describing herself as completely devastated by the back-to-back catastrophes, Bass noted that the combined events claimed the lives of five Angelenos over the course of a single evening, offering her thoughts and prayers to the grieving families.

California Governor Gavin Newsom likewise issued a statement extending his sympathies to the loved ones of those who perished in both the transit collision and the subsequent aviation crash. Newsom recognized the grief impacting the wider NBC4 broadcast family and expressed gratitude to the firefighters and emergency personnel who responded to both disaster scenes.

Federal transportation authorities have launched a formal inquiry into the aviation accident. The National Transportation Safety Board announced that a field investigator would arrive on scene Wednesday morning to inspect the wreckage, examine flight data, and begin determining the probable cause of the fatal crash.
