Three Dead After Los Angeles News Helicopter Crashes While Covering Earlier Fatal Bus Collision

A tragic sequence of events unfolded in Southern California on Tuesday when a broadcast helicopter operating for NBC4 and Telemundo 52 plummeted to the ground and burst into flames in a Los Angeles neighborhood. The aerial crew had been actively reporting on a deadly collision between an SUV and a municipal transit bus when their own aircraft went down, leaving at least three people dead and several others injured.

Emergency officials confirmed that two individuals aboard the news helicopter lost their lives in the crash, while at least one person on the ground was also killed. The sudden catastrophe turned a breaking news assignment into a scene of devastation, shocking both local residents and members of the journalism community across the region.

The aircraft crashed near a commercial storage facility in Chatsworth, a community situated in the northwestern San Fernando Valley. At the time of the aviation disaster, news organizations were monitoring the aftermath of a severe traffic accident from earlier in the day, in which an SUV had broadsided a city bus with enough force to become wedged halfway into the transit vehicle. That initial roadway crash had already resulted in two fatalities and injured six passengers.

The combined toll of both incidents cast a heavy shadow over the city. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass publicly addressed the double tragedy, noting that the loss of five Angelenos was deeply painful and acknowledging that the Chatsworth community would be enduring a prolonged period of grief in the wake of the day's events.

The news of the helicopter's destruction was delivered under somber circumstances on live television. Longtime NBC4 Los Angeles anchor Colleen Williams broke into the station's broadcast to confirm the deaths of the two crew members aboard the aircraft, speaking with visible emotion as she stated that the newsroom needed time to process the unfolding horror before the broadcast temporarily cut away.

Ground reporters in the immediate vicinity witnessed the disaster unfold in real time. NBC4 reporter Robert Kovacik, who was stationed nearby covering the transit bus crash, observed a plume of heavy black smoke rising into the sky and immediately made his way to the helicopter crash location, where dozens of police cruisers and emergency medical teams were converging to seal off the perimeter.

First responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department confronted extreme wreckage upon reaching the impact site. Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Branden Silverman described the aircraft as almost entirely destroyed, explaining that responders faced the difficult task of sifting through charred debris to account for the victims and officially confirm the helicopter's markings, noting that even the tail assembly was no longer visible.

The ensuing blaze also caused significant property damage on the ground. According to fire officials, the intense fire ignited by the crash spread quickly to four nearby automobiles and two industrial storage containers before firefighting crews managed to rapidly extinguish the flames.

In addition to the fatalities recorded at the scene, two individuals were transported to local hospitals for emergency medical care. Battalion Chief Rico A. Gross of the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed the transports, though official details regarding the severity of their injuries and current medical conditions were not immediately made public.

The victims who died aboard the aircraft were later identified by station officials as aerial reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw. Both were employed by Angel City Air, an aviation contractor that operated the helicopter for local broadcast stations.

Moreno, an Orange County native, had built an extensive reporting career across Southern California. After graduating from Chapman University in 2010 with a dual degree in broadcast journalism and political science, she joined the Angel City Air helicopter unit that same year and became a well-known voice providing aerial coverage for both NBC4 and Telemundo 52, teaming up in the air with Marciniw in 2023.

Marciniw was a longtime Southern California resident who graduated from Burbank High School in 1974 and possessed years of flying experience in the region's complex airspace.

In a shared statement, NBC4 and Telemundo 52 Los Angeles expressed profound sorrow over the loss of their colleagues, offering heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and co-workers of everyone who perished. California Governor Gavin Newsom also issued a public statement via social media, expressing sympathy for the victims and their families while expressing gratitude to the first responders who managed the dual crash sites.

Federal authorities are moving quickly to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal flight. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are scheduled to arrive at the Chatsworth location to conduct an exhaustive inquiry into potential mechanical, environmental, or operational causes.

The disaster adds to a documented history of hazards associated with aerial news operations. Federal accident data and historical news reports show that since the year 2000, at least eight fatal crashes involving news helicopters have taken place across the United States, claiming a total of 16 lives.

Notable recent occurrences in the sector include a 2023 incident in New Jersey where a pilot and photographer flying for Philadelphia station WPVI died after their helicopter went down in a forest, as well as a 2022 crash along a highway in Charlotte, North Carolina, that killed a meteorologist and pilot during a training exercise for station WBTV.
