The Rise of 'Pheromone-Maxxing': What It Means and Why It's Not as Simple as Skipping Showers

In a surprising twist of social media trends, some Gen Z men are embracing a practice known as "pheromone-maxxing." This trend, which has gained traction on platforms like TikTok, involves men intentionally skipping showers and forgoing the use of deodorant and cologne in an attempt to amplify their natural scent, which they believe can increase their attractiveness to potential partners. But does this unconventional dating strategy hold any scientific merit?

Pheromone-maxxing, as the name suggests, is rooted in the idea that humans emit chemical signals through body odor that can influence attraction. While there is some scientific basis to the concept of scent playing a role in human attraction, experts caution that the idea of intentionally maximizing pheromones through hygiene neglect is unfounded.

"The concept of pheromone-maxxing takes a kernel of legitimate science — the fact that humans produce individual chemical odors and that smell can influence how we perceive other people — and stretches it into a conclusion the science doesn't support," says Dr. Shereen Teymour, a board-certified dermatologist in New York.

Pheromones are chemical signals that are released between individuals of the same species and can trigger behavioral or physiological responses. In animal species, pheromones are often linked to mating behaviors, but in humans, the link between pheromones and romantic attraction is less clear. Pamela Dalton, a psychologist and olfactory scientist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, explains that while humans do emit chemicals through body odor, these chemicals do not influence human behavior in the same way they do in other species.

Despite the lack of scientific evidence supporting the idea of pheromone-maxxing, the trend has gained a following within the looksmaxxing community, which advocates for extreme methods to achieve physical attractiveness. This community has been known for promoting controversial practices, such as "bonesmashing" and "leanmaxx," which involve breaking bones or using drugs to lower body fat percentage.

The rise of pheromone-maxxing has sparked a debate about the importance of personal hygiene and the role of scent in human attraction. While some men claim to have received positive feedback from women as a result of their decision to forgo hygiene products, Dr. Teymour emphasizes that this does not necessarily mean they are maximizing their pheromones.

"Not showering isn't pheromone-maxxing," she says. "For the most part, it's bacteria-maxxing."

Proper hygiene is still important for maintaining good health and preventing the spread of disease. Teymour advises using gentle cleansers in areas prone to sweat and bacteria, avoiding overly hot water and harsh antibacterial soaps, and understanding the role of products on your skin.

Ultimately, the decision to embrace or reject the pheromone-maxxing trend is a personal one. While some men may find it appealing to experiment with unconventional methods of attracting partners, it's important to remember that personal hygiene and overall health should always be a priority.
