Voters across southern New Jersey will have the opportunity to hear directly from their congressional contenders next month as incumbent Republican Representative Jeff Van Drew prepares to debate Democratic challenger Zack Mullock. The political showdown will place the future direction of New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District under the spotlight ahead of the upcoming election cycle.
The scheduled political contest is slated to take place on October 22, commencing promptly at 6:00 p.m. Organized as a concentrated one-hour event, the debate will be held inside the Campus Center Theatre, located on the Galloway campus of Stockton University. The university setting serves as a prominent regional backdrop for the high-stakes legislative discussion.
The event is being organized and cosponsored through a collaborative partnership between the William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy at Stockton University and local news organization The Press of Atlantic City. This joint effort combines academic civic research with local journalistic coverage to facilitate a structured public discussion for South Jersey residents.
In keeping with modern broadcast formats designed to maximize digital access and minimize direct disruption, organizers have confirmed that the debate will be conducted without an in-person audience in attendance. The empty theater setting will allow the focus to remain strictly on the candidates and the policy issues facing the constituency.
Voters across the sprawling district and beyond will be able to follow the entire one-hour exchange remotely via real-time digital broadcasts. The program will be livestreamed on the William J. Hughes Center’s dedicated YouTube channel, as well as streamed directly on the official website of The Press of Atlantic City.
To ensure that community concerns are directly addressed during the broadcast, organizers have invited members of the public to participate in the process by submitting candidate questions in advance. Constituents wishing to propose topics can submit inquiries via email to either the Hughes Center or the newsroom of The Press of Atlantic City, including the designated identifier "CD2 Questions" within the subject line.
The questioning during the broadcast will be handled by a two-member panel representing both sponsoring entities. Nicholas Huba, who serves as the digital editor for The Press of Atlantic City, will join Alyssa Maurice, the assistant director for the William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy, in directing inquiries to both contenders throughout the evening.
The partnership of an experienced regional journalist and an academic public policy specialist is designed to cover a broad spectrum of local, state, and national concerns. The panelists are tasked with probing each candidate's record, qualifications, and proposed legislative priorities for the expansive congressional district.
Incumbent Representative Jeff Van Drew enters the debate with several years of federal legislative tenure, having represented New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2019. His political trajectory has been particularly notable; he originally won his seat in Congress as a Democrat before formally switching his political affiliation to become a Republican in January 2020.
Beyond his congressional service, Van Drew brings a long background in local government and professional healthcare practice. A dentist in his private career, his earlier public service career includes terms as a local municipal official, serving as the mayor of Dennis Township, as well as holding countywide office as a Cape May County freeholder.
Challenger Zack Mullock enters the congressional contest with a background grounded in local municipal governance within the same region. Mullock currently serves as the mayor of the City of Cape May, where he is serving his second term in office, following earlier service as a member of the Cape May city council.
Mullock's municipal leadership in Cape May forms the cornerstone of his candidacy as he seeks federal office. His background as a local mayor and council member highlights the race's dynamic between a sitting local executive and an established federal incumbent holding deep political history in the area.
The geographic footprint of New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District encompasses a wide swath of South Jersey's political map. The district includes the entirety of Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties, while also incorporating sections of both Gloucester and Ocean counties.
Because the district bridges distinct coastal, rural, and suburban communities, the issues facing its electorate span a diverse range of economic and governance challenges. The upcoming October 22 debate at Stockton University will provide both Van Drew and Mullock a centralized platform to present their contrasting visions directly to residents across every corner of the district.
