Oklahoma Pastors Launch Sermon Series to Challenge Political Exploitation of Christian Faith

Across Oklahoma, an increasing number of religious leaders are speaking out against the pervasive use of Christian imagery and rhetoric in political campaigns. As election season ramps up, local clergy are voicing deep apprehension regarding the manner in which political hopefuls co-opt the Christian faith in order to appeal to voters and secure victories at the ballot box.

The pushback comes as thousands of households throughout the state receive political campaign literature boldly proclaiming the candidates' devout Christian credentials. At the same time, television broadcasts across Oklahoma frequently feature campaign advertisements depicting political figures strolling through church sanctuaries, outwardly demonstrating their religious affiliations to prospective constituents.

This overt mixing of religious symbolism with political campaigning has alarmed multiple area pastors. Rather than seeing these displays as authentic expressions of faith, several ministers view them as opportunistic maneuvers designed to exploit religious devotion for partisan advancement, prompting them to address the issue directly from their pulpits.

Among the prominent voices addressing this phenomenon is the Rev. Mark Foster, who serves as the senior pastor of Acts 2 United Methodist Church in Edmond. Foster has observed firsthand the influx of campaign materials entering the mailboxes of local residents, with literature regularly declaring that casting a ballot for a particular candidate represents an endorsement of foundational Christian values.

However, Foster openly challenges the true meaning and substance behind such sweeping campaign declarations. He questions what politicians actually intend to convey when they invoke Christian values, asking whether their definitions encompass core biblical responsibilities such as feeding the hungry, offering assistance to neighbors, or providing support to immigrants and strangers in need.

According to Foster, political candidates who tout their faith tend to be highly selective about which principles they choose to emphasize publicly. He pointed out that these political appeals rarely align with or reflect the profound moral teachings outlined in the Beatitudes, the well-known collection of blessings delivered by Jesus Christ in the fifth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew.

In an effort to help his congregation navigate these complex dynamics, Foster introduced a dedicated sermon series entitled "Separation of Church and Hate." The series is designed to equip church members with the critical discernment needed to differentiate between individuals demonstrating genuine Christian virtue and those who merely adopt religious language to advance political ambitions.

Foster stressed the urgency and timeliness of addressing these issues during the current campaign cycle. Speaking to his congregation during the series debut on Sept. 6, the pastor issued a stern warning regarding the dangers of allowing political candidates over the ensuing nine weeks to distort the Christian message of divine love by effectively fusing Jesus with hostility and meanness.

During the launch of the series at the Edmond church, Foster also engaged with guest speaker Julian Davis Reid, who delivered a message reinforcing the initiative’s central themes. The collaboration highlighted the church’s intentional effort to create thoughtful dialogue around how faith ought to be practiced without succumbing to partisan manipulation.

Acts 2 United Methodist Church is far from alone in challenging the misuse of religious faith on the campaign trail. A broader coalition of Oklahoma churches is actively introducing teaching series and educational programs aimed at confronting the growing prevalence of political divisiveness, hatred, and controversial political-religious ideologies such as Christian nationalism.

Joining this pastoral movement is the Rev. David Wheeler, the senior minister at New Covenant Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Wheeler is similarly using his pulpit to encourage congregants to reflect on how genuine faith interacts with public life, offering an alternative vision to the partisan narratives dominating contemporary political discourse.

Wheeler’s sermon series, which begins on Sunday, Sept. 13, is titled "Faith Was Never Supposed to be Silent: Justice is What Faith Sounds Like in Public." The series underscores the premise that a faithful public witness should be defined by advocacy for justice and compassion rather than electoral expediency or sectarian division.

These concerted efforts by Oklahoma pastors reflect a broader determination within local congregations to resist the commercialization and weaponization of their faith. By addressing these topics head-on, church leaders hope to prevent candidates from redefining religious devotion as a political tool that fosters societal division rather than communal harmony and goodwill.

Ministers emphasize that reclaiming the core tenets of their faith requires a conscious effort to focus on love, service, and biblical justice. By fostering critical thinking among parishioners, these leaders seek to insulate their faith communities from political rhetoric that substitutes genuine religious commitment with convenient slogans designed purely for electoral advantage.

As campaign advertisements continue to air and mailboxes remain filled with political fliers, the message emerging from Oklahoma pulpits remains steadfast. Pastors across the state are urging believers to evaluate political claims through the lens of authentic compassion and scriptural integrity, ensuring that their faith remains distinct from partisan agendas.
