The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) has announced a strategic pause in its annual awards gala, scheduled to take place in 2027. The Cambridge-based nonprofit organization is taking this opportunity to evaluate its fundraising strategy and seek input from sponsors and community stakeholders. This decision comes after nearly a quarter-century of hosting the gala, which has been one of MAPS' primary fundraising events.

However, rising costs associated with hosting a large-scale event for over 400 people have presented challenges that prompted a review of future fundraising options. "We felt the need to take the time to evaluate our fundraising options and consider other ways of celebrating our communities," said Paulo Pinto, CEO of the Alliance. "Our main concern lies with the countless business and community leaders who have helped us build our Gala through their generosity, and so we want them to be an integral part of our fundraising strategy going forward."
MAPS plans to meet with past sponsors and distribute surveys to gather input about sponsorship opportunities, funding priorities, and the future of the gala. The review process is intended to help shape MAPS' next phase of community engagement and fundraising while preserving the Gala's legacy.
The nonprofit is also committed to conducting one-on-one meetings with previous sponsors and supporters to better understand their concerns, suggestions, and ideas for future fundraising efforts. This approach is expected to provide valuable insights that will inform the organization's strategic planning.
