Life-Term Inmate Accused of Attempted Murder in Attack on Correctional Counselor at Lancaster Prison

State corrections authorities are investigating a severe security breach and violent assault at California State Prison, Los Angeles County, where an incarcerated murderer serving a life term allegedly attempted to kill a correctional counselor inside an administrative office.

The dangerous confrontation unfolded during the morning hours of September 10, when the suspect, identified by prison officials as 50-year-old Marcus Curry, was present for an interaction at the counselor’s office. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the physical assault took place around 8:30 a.m. as Curry was in the process of leaving the staff member's workspace.

The sudden aggression triggered an immediate emergency response from institutional personnel. Custody officers and on-duty staff moved swiftly to contain the escalating situation, successfully subduing and apprehending Curry before further harm could occur. During a subsequent search of the immediate area, responding personnel discovered and secured an improvised weapon that had been present at the scene.

The correctional counselor sustained physical injuries during the altercation and required urgent medical care. Prison personnel coordinated emergency transport, taking the injured employee to an outside healthcare facility for professional evaluation and treatment. Specific details regarding the full extent of the counselor's injuries have not been publicly disclosed.

In the wake of the violent encounter, institutional administrators acted to isolate the suspect from the general population. Curry was promptly transferred to restricted housing, where he remains separated from the wider facility while the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Investigative Services Unit conducts a comprehensive review of the incident.

Prison officials confirmed that a definitive motive for the violent attack has not yet been established. Investigators are continuing to examine the background of the interaction, the circumstances surrounding Curry’s presence in the counseling suite, and the events immediately preceding the physical confrontation.

Beyond internal administrative and disciplinary proceedings, the case is moving forward through the county justice system. Institutional authorities announced that the comprehensive findings of the investigation will be formally submitted to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, with investigators seeking felony charges of attempted homicide against Curry.

State correctional records indicate that Curry has a prolonged history within the state penal system and has been housed at the Lancaster penitentiary for more than two decades. His custody at the facility officially began on March 28, 2000, following multiple serious felony convictions.

Curry is currently serving an extensive prison sentence that includes a life term with the possibility of parole. That initial sentence was handed down after he was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm under California’s three-strikes sentencing framework.

In conjunction with that term, Curry was also ordered to serve a concurrent 20-year prison sentence stemming from an assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer. That conviction was prosecuted as a second-strike offense and carried additional statutory sentencing enhancements for the explicit use of a firearm and the infliction of great bodily injury.

Curry’s criminal record was further compounded on February 13, 2002, when he received an additional life sentence with the possibility of parole in San Diego County. In that proceeding, he was convicted of second-degree murder as a third striker, an offense accompanied by an enhancement for the intentional discharge of a firearm resulting in severe bodily harm or death.

The prospect of new attempted homicide charges presents significant legal ramifications for the 50-year-old inmate. While Curry is already incarcerated under multiple life terms, an attempted murder conviction involving a correctional staff member carries severe statutory penalties and will heavily influence any future parole board considerations or custody status determinations.

The attack occurred at one of Southern California's major state correctional hubs. Situated in Lancaster, California State Prison, Los Angeles County originally opened its doors in 1993. The complex is designed to house approximately 3,250 inmates spanning a wide spectrum of custodial classifications, ranging from minimum- and medium-security populations to maximum- and high-security tiers.

Operating such an expansive and multifaceted correctional institution requires a massive workforce. The Lancaster facility maintains an operational staff of approximately 1,700 state employees, including correctional counselors, administrative personnel, healthcare workers, and custodial officers who manage the daily routines of the prison.

In addition to standard custodial supervision, the Lancaster complex provides a variety of academic classrooms and vocational training programs intended for incarcerated individuals. Counselors play a pivotal role within this environment, interacting directly with inmates across security classifications to manage case files, rehabilitative pathways, and institutional assignments.

As the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office evaluates the upcoming referral for attempted murder charges, state investigators continue to process physical evidence and interview witnesses. The incident underscores the ongoing physical dangers faced by institutional staff and professional personnel working within high-security state correctional facilities.
