Fresno Family Demands Justice After 19-Year-Old Killed in Suspected DUI Cliff Crash Near Shaver Lake

A Fresno family is enduring unimaginable heartbreak and demanding legal accountability after a 19-year-old woman was killed in a suspected DUI crash near Shaver Lake. The tragic incident, which occurred when a vehicle careened off a mountain roadway and plunged down a steep cliff, has left loved ones mourning a vibrant young life while the driver faces serious criminal charges.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the fatal collision happened on a Thursday along Highway 168 in the vicinity of Littlefield Road. Investigators stated that the vehicle veered off the paved road and plummeted roughly 60 feet down the mountainside, resulting in catastrophic damage upon impact.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find three individuals involved in the wreck. Law enforcement officials determined that the driver, identified as 32-year-old Ricardo Arceo-Tapia, was operating the motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the off-road descent.

The victim of the fatal wreck, 19-year-old Arianna Perez, was riding as a passenger inside the vehicle alongside her boyfriend. According to findings released by California Highway Patrol investigators, Perez was not wearing a seat belt during the incident and sustained fatal injuries, leading authorities to pronounce her dead at the scene.

Both Arceo-Tapia and Perez’s boyfriend, David Jimenez, managed to survive the violent 60-foot fall down the cliffside. Family members of the victim noted that the driver was an acquaintance of the young couple rather than a close relative or longtime companion.

In the days following the crash, Perez’s devastated relatives began the difficult process of speaking out about their profound loss, expressing both deep sorrow and rising frustration over the circumstances that led to the teenager’s untimely death.

Her younger sister, Amiryes Perez, spoke through tears as she contemplated a future permanently stripped of shared milestones and family celebrations. She reflected on the holidays and everyday moments that they would no longer share together, lamenting that her older sister would never be present to witness her upcoming 18th birthday or see her walk across the stage at high school graduation.

Amiryes also emphasized that the seventeen years they had together as siblings could never feel like enough time, expressing deep anguish over the realization that she will never see her sister again. She shared that the sudden void left behind has altered the entire family's reality.

Loved ones remembered Arianna, affectionately called "Nana," as an adventurous, caring, and vibrant individual who embraced every opportunity to explore the world around her. Amiryes recalled her sister’s deep love for nature, noting that she found immense joy in going to the beach and spending hours searching for and collecting sand dollars along the shore.

The teenager's father, Anthony Perez, also voiced the crushing emotional weight of outliving his child. He stated that parents are naturally supposed to pass away before their children rather than the other way around, describing the reality of burying a 19-year-old daughter as an exceptionally painful and difficult ordeal to navigate.

Jimenez, who survived the traumatic descent alongside the driver, described the agonizing moments when the gravity of the situation became undeniably clear. He recalled feeling completely numb to physical pain immediately after the crash, with shock taking over as he desperately pleaded against the reality that his girlfriend had not survived the impact.

Meanwhile, Arceo-Tapia made his initial appearance in court to face charges related to the fatal incident. However, formal proceedings were briefly put on hold after the court granted a one-week postponement of his arraignment so that he could secure private legal representation for his defense.

As the legal process commenced, public records obtained from the court brought further distress to the victim's family. Court documentation revealed that Arceo-Tapia was actively serving probation for an entirely separate driving under the influence conviction that had been handed down less than a month before the fatal Shaver Lake crash.

Perez’s family members explained that they had been completely unaware of Arceo-Tapia’s prior conviction and his active probationary status. Learning that the driver had been convicted of impaired driving only weeks earlier amplified the family's grief and deepened their determination to ensure the legal system holds him fully accountable.

Despite the intense anger and frustration surrounding the preventable circumstances of the crash, Amiryes reiterated that the family remains resolute in their pursuit of justice. She stated firmly that the family will stand strong until justice is served on behalf of her deceased sister.

Arceo-Tapia remains scheduled to return to the courtroom the following week to formally undergo arraignment proceedings on the charges stemming from the deadly collision. In the meantime, Perez’s family has established a GoFundMe fundraising campaign to help alleviate the financial burden of funeral and memorial expenses as they prepare to lay the 19-year-old to rest.
