Jacksonville, FL – The First Alert Weather Team at Action News Jax is warning residents of a shift in weather patterns that will bring a series of coastal showers and inland storms to Northeast Florida. This morning, partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures in the 70s are expected, but the focus is on the rain that will begin to move onshore later in the day.
As the morning progresses, a few showers over the Atlantic Ocean will make their way to the coastline, potentially leading to heavy downpours in coastal counties. By the afternoon, this rain will shift further inland, reaching areas past Highway 301 and toward I-75. This region could see additional rounds of heavy rain, accompanied by frequent lightning and gusty winds.
Despite the expected heavy rain, the I-95 corridor is expected to have a lot of dry hours this afternoon. The weather pattern is expected to remain consistent throughout much of the week, with morning coastal showers and afternoon inland storms. This pattern will keep the risk of rip currents elevated at local beaches due to onshore winds.
Afternoons will see temperatures in the 80s along the beaches, while inland areas can expect temperatures to rise to the low to middle 90s. This heat, combined with the potential for heavy rain, has placed Jacksonville in the 12th place on the list of years with the most 90-degree days. The city is on track to rise into the "Top 10" this week.
In the tropics, there are no immediate threats to the local area. However, Invest 97L, an offshore system off Louisiana, is expected to become a tropical depression or tropical storm today. It is forecasted to move inland over eastern Texas or western Louisiana by tomorrow evening. These small and compact systems can strengthen or weaken quickly, and hurricane hunters are scheduled to fly into this system this morning to assess its potential.
The next name on the list for tropical storms is Edouard. Meanwhile, the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly, now a tropical wave, are bringing beneficial rains to Puerto Rico. The moisture from this system is expected to approach Florida later this week, but there are no current indications of re-development.
Today's forecast includes a few morning coastal showers, with a high temperature of 91 degrees. Tonight, residents can expect a coastal shower followed by partly cloudy skies, with a low temperature of 74 degrees. The forecast for the coming days shows a pattern of morning coastal showers and afternoon storms, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-90s.
