Federal and Local Authorities Search Underground Structure in Ongoing Brittany Shank Missing Person Investigation

Federal agents and county sheriff's deputies renewed search efforts in rural Leonidas Township on Wednesday, September 16, as part of the active, multi-year investigation into the disappearance of Brittany Shank. Shank, a Sturgis woman who vanished late in 2018, remains the focus of dedicated efforts by local and federal law enforcement agencies working to resolve the circumstances surrounding her sudden disappearance.

The targeted activity centered on a parcel located off Onley Road, where law enforcement personnel converged to examine an underground structure situated in an open field. Investigators focused their operational resources on the subterranean site after receiving a specific tip directing them toward the location.

St. Joseph County Undersheriff Dave Northrup explained the decision to conduct the inspection, confirming that the new lead prompted the multi-agency response. Undersheriff Northrup noted that the department treats every incoming tip with the same level of investigative care, ensuring that potential leads are thoroughly vetted regardless of the amount of time that has passed since Shank was last seen.

While personnel clad in Federal Bureau of Investigation jackets conducted the physical search of the field, Northrup emphasized the overarching mission guiding the ongoing inquiry. He stated that the department's priority is ensuring community safety while determining whether Shank's disappearance was the result of foul play or an accidental tragedy, stressing that investigators are committed to reaching a definitive outcome.

Despite the noticeable law enforcement presence and specialized search efforts on Onley Road, officials were careful to manage expectations regarding the day's developments. Authorities emphasized that conducting physical searches based on newly submitted tips represents a standard, routine aspect of the ongoing investigation and does not signal that physical evidence has been secured or that a breakthrough has been confirmed.

To carry out the complex examination of the subterranean site, the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office coordinated closely with the FBI Detroit Field Office. The federal agency provided technical assistance and specialized manpower to assist county investigators during the on-site inspection.

Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Runyan of the FBI Detroit Field Office addressed the collaboration in a formal statement released on September 15. Runyan stated that every available investigative resource is vital when an individual is missing, confirming that FBI Detroit personnel—including specialized members of the agency's Evidence Response Team—were deployed directly to the scene to assist county deputies.

Runyan highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation, noting that the FBI is proud to stand beside local partners by supplying the specialized technical capabilities and logistical resources necessary for such intensive operations. She underscored that these joint efforts are focused on delivering long-awaited answers to the missing woman's family and the local community.

Shank's case represents one of the longest-running missing persons investigations in St. Joseph County history. Over the years, her family and local law enforcement have continually sought clarity and new information to help determine what happened to her after she vanished.

The case dates back to the night of November 30, 2018, when the 23-year-old Sturgis woman disappeared under unusual and troubling circumstances. Her sudden absence prompted an extensive investigative response across the region that remains open and active today.

According to investigative findings, Shank was last seen at approximately 9:00 p.m. on November 30, 2018, after her motor vehicle was involved in a crash and ended up in a ditch near Fawn River Road. The roadside accident set off a rapid and confusing sequence of events that investigators have worked to reconstruct.

Earlier during that same evening, family members observed Shank in the company of an unidentified man. The identity and potential role of that unknown companion have remained an enduring point of interest within the broader investigation into her final known movements.

Shortly following the collision on Fawn River Road, Shank made her way to a nearby residence. From that home, she placed an emergency telephone call to 911 dispatchers, establishing the final direct communication recorded by authorities.

Immediately after contacting emergency services, Shank unexpectedly fled from the residence on foot. A witness inside the home caught a final glimpse of her through a window as she ran from the premises, marking the last confirmed sighting of the 23-year-old woman.

The abrupt nature of her departure and the lack of subsequent confirmed contact have left investigators exploring multiple possibilities regarding her fate. Detectives have continued to consider whether Shank encountered criminal foul play or succumbed to an unfortunate, accidental outcome during that late November night.

As investigators continue their work and evaluate the findings from the Onley Road underground structure, local authorities affirm that every potential avenue of inquiry will remain open. The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office and its federal partners maintain that resolving Brittany Shank's case remains a top priority until conclusive answers are delivered to her loved ones and the community.
