Early Chill Brings First Frost of the Season to Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Autumn made an icy early appearance across northern Michigan as residents in several communities throughout the Upper Peninsula woke up to the season's inaugural frost on Monday morning, September 14, 2026. The sudden arrival of sub-freezing conditions officially brought an end to questions regarding when the region would encounter its first cold snap of the year.

According to meteorologists at the National Weather Service, the frosty conditions settled in overnight as temperatures plummeted past the freezing threshold of 32 degrees Fahrenheit across widespread parts of the Upper Peninsula. The sudden temperature drop marked a brisk change in regional weather patterns as chilly air took hold over the northern expanses of the state.

Ben Warren, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, confirmed that patchy frost developed in the southern interior portions of the Keweenaw Peninsula in the western Upper Peninsula. Thermometers in those localized areas dropped into the mid-30s, creating ideal atmospheric conditions for frost accumulation on vehicles, rooftops, and ground cover.

Frosty conditions were similarly reported to the south of Ishpeming, situated west of Marquette, where overnight low temperatures bottomed out at 29 degrees Fahrenheit. Warren stated that a number of other neighboring locations across the Upper Peninsula were also very likely to have experienced widespread morning frost alongside those recorded readings.

Several other regional monitoring locations logged temperatures well below the freezing mark during the overnight hours. The mercury sank to approximately 26 degrees Fahrenheit southwest of Big Bay, while locations southeast of Ironwood recorded lows near 29 degrees Fahrenheit. In the vicinity of Crystal Falls, temperatures dropped to 30 degrees Fahrenheit, further solidifying the reach of the early freeze.

The frosty morning followed advance warnings provided by forecasters to local residents. The National Weather Service had issued its first frost advisory of the season on Sunday evening, September 13, giving community members advanced notice to safeguard sensitive outdoor plants and prepare for the overnight plunge.

The freeze developed ahead of the official calendar transition into the autumn season. While meteorological fall officially got underway on September 1, astronomical fall is not slated to begin until the autumnal equinox arrives on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. Despite the official equinox remaining over a week away, northern Michigan encountered authentic autumn chill ahead of time.

Historical climate data provided by the National Weather Service indicates that the Upper Peninsula typically experiences its first seasonal frost between late September and early October. By contrast, urban centers and communities situated across Michigan's Lower Peninsula generally do not see their initial frost until a window spanning from early to late October.

Climate records across the southern Lower Peninsula show how much later the first freeze typically occurs in more southern latitudes. In Detroit, where the average first frost date is October 21, historical records show the earliest frost occurred on September 22, 1974, and the latest on November 21, 2024. In nearby Ann Arbor, the average first frost occurs on October 16, with extremes ranging from September 19, 2020, to November 11, 1958.

Central and western Lower Peninsula cities also follow later autumnal timelines. Lansing records an average first frost on October 6, with its record earliest occurring on September 13, 1964, and its latest on October 27, 2024. Grand Rapids sees an average frost arrival on October 10, with historical dates spanning from September 3, 1946, to November 12, 2016. In Battle Creek, the average first frost falls on October 8, with historical extremes recorded on September 6, 1962, and November 5, 1946.

Further north in the Lower Peninsula, freezing overnight temperatures arrive earlier in the autumn season. Traverse City maintains an average first frost date of October 6, having recorded an earliest freeze on August 29, 1982, and a latest on November 1, 1971. In Alpena, the average first frost lands on September 25, with records showing an early freeze on August 22, 1957, and a late occurrence on October 26, 2017.

Climate data from the eastern and central Upper Peninsula underscores the consistent vulnerability of northern areas to early cold air. Sault Ste. Marie averages its initial frost on October 1, with historical extremes spanning from August 22, 1950, to October 28, 1963. Marquette typically registers its first frost by September 23, having witnessed freezes as early as August 18, 1968, and as late as October 18, 2021. In Munising, the average frost date is October 1, with extremes noted on August 21, 1969, and November 2, 2024.

The western Upper Peninsula features some of the earliest historical frost timelines in the state. In Copper Harbor, the average frost arrives on October 9, with historical markers on August 9, 1996, and November 1, 1994. Ontonagon records an average frost date of September 24, with records noted on September 6, 1988, and October 17, 2013. Ironwood holds an average first frost date of September 21, having recorded its earliest frost on August 15, 1979, and its latest on October 29, 2016.

With frosty conditions already documented across northern areas, Michigan residents are entering the annual transition toward colder weather. As overnight lows continue to fluctuate throughout September, communities across both peninsulas will be watching local forecasts to see when freezing conditions spread further south.
