Decades of Devotion: How an Abilene Christian University Campus Encounter Blossomed into 72 Years of Marriage

More than seven decades after their initial encounter as young college students, Bob and Betty Hale continue to demonstrate the lasting power of companionship, faith, and humor. Their enduring journey began on the campus of Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, where both had arrived to pursue their higher education before unexpectedly finding their lifelong partners. Today, the couple looks back on a rich history defined by shared values, community dedication, and an expanding family legacy.

Now 92 and 93 years old, the Hales hold a special standing within their local religious community. Bob notes that they are currently recognized as the oldest attendees in their congregation and Bible class, as well as the couple married for the longest continuous duration. Betty remarked with a smile that the milestone caught them somewhat by surprise, noting that they had simply lived their lives day by day rather than actively tallying up the passing decades.

Their love story dates back to the autumn of 1951, when both entered ACU as incoming freshmen. At the time, campus life was bustling around the Barracks building situated east of the Administration building, a structure that housed the campus post office and bookstore alongside dining services. To help support themselves through their studies, both Bob and Betty took on jobs waiting tables in the facility.

Working closely in the dining hall provided the setting for their earliest interactions, including a memorable workplace mishap that Betty still recalls vividly. While balancing a full tray of food, she accidentally dropped a creamer, spilling it directly onto a patron’s clothing. Despite the clumsy accident, the dining hall setting allowed the two young students to take notice of one another amidst the daily campus routine.

The initial romantic spark received a helpful push from Betty’s college roommate, who suggested that Bob might be interested in asking her out. Although Betty cannot pinpoint the exact date he extended the invitation, she remembers that their first outing was an ACU basketball game. Having played high school basketball for Noodle and advancing all the way to the state tournament, Betty had a strong connection to the sport, whereas Bob came from a school that lacked a gymnasium entirely and had never attended a game.

That first sporting event quickly paved the way for an exclusive courtship. While both had entered college with open minds, their connection was immediate and singular. Betty fondly recalls that despite any early thoughts of exploring the freshman social scene, Bob had never dated anyone prior to meeting her. As a result, Betty became his very first and only romantic partner throughout his life.

Following three years of courtship throughout their undergraduate education, the couple formalized their commitment to one another. Bob and Betty exchanged their wedding vows on September 3, 1954, in a ceremony held inside the ACU chapel. That ceremony marked the start of a marriage that would weather more than seven decades of life transitions, family milestones, and community service.

When their 72nd wedding anniversary arrived, the couple opted for a simple and relaxed celebration rather than an elaborate party. Betty humorously explained that they spent the day reclining at home, untroubled by expectations and entirely content to rest together. The couple emphasized that they feel no pressure from outside opinions, preferring to enjoy their milestone anniversary on their own comfortable terms.

Even in their nineties, the Hales maintain an active daily routine centered on faith and altruism. In addition to attending church services and participating in Bible study, they regularly share meals with friends and dedicate time each week to community service by volunteering as delivery drivers for Meals on Wheels Plus, Inc.

The weekly volunteer delivery route serves a practical purpose in their household routine as well. When asked about the importance of their ongoing service, Betty playfully explained that driving for Meals on Wheels provides a dependable rhythm to their schedule. The fixed volunteer day helps Bob keep track of the weekly calendar, signaling their evening church activities and orienting them toward the upcoming days of the week.

Throughout their decades together, a lively sense of humor has remained a cornerstone of their relationship. The couple routinely exchanges lighthearted teasing, with Bob joking that he practices selective hearing whenever his wife gives him directions. In response, Betty playfully points out moments of performative chivalry, admitting with a laugh that Bob’s car-door assistance was likely for the benefit of visiting observers.

When reflecting on the secret behind their remarkable longevity as a couple, Bob provides a direct and simple answer: each other. Their shared narrative has been anchored in deep mutual friendship, a resilient faith foundation, and an unwavering commitment made decades ago on their college campus.

Beyond their personal partnership, the Hales have extended their love to the broader community by opening their home to numerous foster children over the years. They went on to adopt two children, both of whom followed in their parents' academic footsteps by graduating from Abilene Christian University.

The ACU tradition has since reached a third generation, with both of their grandsons also earning degrees as alumni of the university. What began as a chance meeting between two student dining hall workers in 1951 has transformed into a multi-generational family legacy, continuing to thrive more than 72 years after it first began.
