For the second consecutive year, military veterans residing in transitional housing in Longmont are receiving a substantial supply of locally raised meat, thanks to generous community contributions originating from the Boulder County Fair’s annual junior livestock sale. The initiative bridges the agricultural efforts of local youth with charitable assistance for formerly homeless veterans.

Saying goodbye to livestock raised with care can be an emotional milestone for participants in 4-H and FFA programs. However, for 18-year-old Jasper Helgans, parting with his market pig, named Quarter, was made considerably easier by the knowledge that the animal would directly nourish local residents facing difficult life transitions.

Quarter was among a selection of livestock purchased at the county auction and designated for delivery to VCP Longmont. Operated by the nonprofit Veterans Community Project, the specialized village situated at 3095 Mountain Brook Drive provides supportive housing and resources designed to help veterans reintegrate into stable, independent living situations.

In total, the village received approximately 600 pounds of high-quality meat from the recent fair auction, according to representatives from the nonprofit organization. The collective donation encompassed a variety of proteins, including cuts of pork, beef, and lamb, all harvested from animals presented by youth exhibitors during the fair’s livestock competition.

Following the conclusion of the auction, the donated animals were processed, professionally packaged, and transported directly to the Longmont facility. To properly accommodate the significant influx of provisions, the organization distributed the packages across three separate refrigeration units, placing two freezers inside an on-site storage area and a third inside a property model home.

The stocked freezers now hold an assortment of meal staples, ranging from ground beef and ground lamb to bacon, Italian sausage, and pork chops. Thanks to these donations, incoming residents moving into the village will find their personal kitchen freezers fully supplied with nutritious food from the moment they arrive.

Helgans, who recently concluded his tenure in youth agricultural programming after aging out of his 4-H club, is currently beginning his freshman year at the University of Colorado Boulder. This year’s contribution represents the second time he has coordinated with an auction buyer to direct meat supplies to VCP Longmont, following a similar arrangement involving his market heifer the previous year.

The philanthropic endeavor was made possible through the financial backing of the Longmont Les Schwab Tire Center, where store manager Hilario Farias stepped forward to place the winning bid on Helgans’ pig. Farias purchased Quarter for $6,500 and ensured the processed pork was routed straight to the veterans village, repeating the supportive role he played in the 2025 livestock sale.

At traditional county fair livestock auctions, commercial buyers routinely purchase livestock to support young agriculturalists, frequently donating the processed meat to regional food pantries, charitable feeding operations, or Meals on Wheels programs. In other instances, buyers retain the meat for personal use or gift the animals back to the youth who raised them.

Helgans sought to create an additional pathway for auction donations after recognizing the immediate needs of the nearby veterans community. His prior connection to the facility developed during his high school years at Silver Creek High School, located west of the tiny home development along Nelson Road, where he drove past the property on a daily basis.

Beyond his livestock contributions, Helgans previously served as a community service representative for the Easy Riders 4-H Club, where he coordinated a fundraising bake sale to benefit VCP Longmont. His continued advocacy led him to approach commercial buyers with the proposal of directly supplying the village with livestock auction yields.

Jennifer Seybold, executive director of VCP Longmont, explained that the volume of donated meat was so extensive that the nonprofit had to invest in an additional freezer to safely hold all the packages. Despite the equipment expense, Seybold noted that the investment was exceptionally worthwhile, emphasizing that the donated food substantially reduces the facility’s everyday operational costs.

The longevity of such agricultural donations provides extended relief for the organization’s food services. According to Seybold, the beef provided from Helgans’ heifer during the previous year’s fair lasted the village for nearly an entire year, only running out a couple of months prior to the arrival of this latest shipment.

The Longmont village features 26 dedicated tiny homes where veterans struggling with homelessness can live free of charge while receiving specialized case management services. Seybold highlighted that receiving direct support from local business leaders and neighborhood youth delivers a profound emotional boost to residents, serving as a meaningful reminder of community appreciation.

Farias recalled being immediately receptive when Helgans first approached him in 2025 with the concept of redirecting auction livestock purchases to the village. The business manager noted that community reinvestment remains a core priority for his team, making the project a seamless match for their charitable goals.

Community members interested in further supporting the organization's work will have an upcoming opportunity to contribute during VCP Longmont’s annual House Party fundraiser, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Left Hand Brewing Company, with tickets accessible through the organization's official event webpage.
