As foliage across Massachusetts begins its seasonal transformation, communities throughout the SouthCoast and Greater New Bedford are preparing a robust calendar of autumn celebrations. Local organizers have scheduled a wide variety of weekend gatherings, agricultural exhibits, family-focused carnivals, and culinary competitions designed to welcome the cooler weather.

These seasonal events offer area residents and visitors an opportunity to experience traditional autumn pastimes without embarking on long road trips. From agricultural showcases to charity fundraisers, the diverse slate of programming reflects the cultural heritage, local craftsmanship, and community spirit shared across Bristol and Plymouth counties.

The festivities begin in Dartmouth with the Dartmouth Grange Fair, held on Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12. Hosted at The Dartmouth Grange at 1133 Fisher Road, the two-day fair provides free admission to all visitors. The gates open at 4 p.m. on Friday, featuring an evening lineup that includes an old-fashioned pie-eating contest at 6:30 p.m., followed immediately by a family magic show at 7 p.m.

The Grange Fair continues on Saturday with an array of educational and traditional exhibits. Attendees can observe live beekeeping demonstrations, participate in seasonal apple tastings, admire art quilting showcases, and browse the Giant Penny Sale. Live musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day by the Unlikely Strummers Ukulele Band.

Concurrently, the town of Acushnet will host its 45th annual Apple-Peach Festival on Saturday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 13. Centered at the historic Long Plain Museum at 1203 Main St., this long-running festival honors local agriculture with fresh peach cobbler, baked goods, artisan crafts, and live musical acts. A centerpiece of the weekend is the festive Sunday parade, which steps off at 10 a.m. from Pope Park and makes its way directly to the festival grounds.

Dartmouth will also welcome the inaugural Whaling City Collective Community Festival on Saturday, Sept. 12. Scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holy Ghost Grounds & Hall, located at 104 Allens Neck Road, this free indoor and outdoor gathering features local artisan vendors, handcrafted merchandise, food trucks, and live music. Attendees of all ages can also take part in family field day competitions and enter raffles for a variety of prizes.

For evening shoppers, the town of Middleboro is hosting the "Sip & Stroll: Harvest" on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. Set on the Middleboro Town Hall Lawn at 10 Nickerson Ave., the event provides free parking and free entry. Guests can sample craft beverages via on-site bar services, purchase meals from food trucks, and browse goods displayed by dozens of regional vendors.

The following weekend brings multiple family-centered activities, beginning with the Dartmouth Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 19. Organized by the Southcoast YMCA at 276 Gulf Road in Dartmouth, the event runs from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and targets children ages 2 to 10. Admission is $10 per child with advance online registration required, covering pumpkin decorating, seasonal crafts, face painting, a story walk, bounce house access, and popcorn snacks.

Also on Saturday, Sept. 19, New Bedford will host Fall Festa at Madeira Field, situated at 50 Madeira Ave. Offering free admission for all ages, the gathering centers on seasonal community entertainment, featuring a traditional pig roast, live country music performances, local craft tables, and dedicated children’s activities.

Craft enthusiasts can head to Middleboro that same Saturday for the Titicut Green Fall Festival, located at 38 Plymouth St. Running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event will assemble more than 60 artisans, crafters, and retail vendors. Visitors can sample homemade preserves, dine at the on-site café, and participate in gift raffles throughout the afternoon.

Toward the end of the month, the South Coast Harvest Festival takes over the Westport Fairgrounds at 200 Pine Hill Road in Westport. Running from Friday, Sept. 25, through Sunday, Sept. 27, the multiday festival features antique truck displays, illuminated garden setups, an extensive artisan market, live music, and classic fall food concessions. Admission costs $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 to 12, and is free for children under 5.

As the calendar turns to October, fundraising and culinary traditions take center stage. On Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4, New Bedford’s waterfront will host Oktoberfest at City Pier 3, located at 51 MacArthur Drive. The event raises funds to support local at-risk youth while offering tastings of craft beers, hard seltzers, and sangria. Guests can also enjoy live music, play casual cornhole matches, and purchase items from visiting food trucks and vendors. Presale entry tickets are priced at $15, while day-of gate admission is $20.

The seasonal festival circuit continues on Tuesday, Oct. 6, with the 21st annual New Bedford Seaport Chowder Festival. Hosted from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Rachel's Lakeside, 950 State Road in Dartmouth, the popular culinary gathering allows attendees to sample and vote on signature soups and chowders prepared by leading area restaurants. The evening includes live music from the band Be Kind, Rewind, with tickets available for $35 alongside dedicated pricing for children ages 6 to 12.

Together, these varied gatherings provide residents across Greater New Bedford and neighboring communities with a full schedule of autumn festivities, supporting local artisans, non-profit initiatives, and small businesses throughout the fall season.
