Capital Region Business Roundup: QuickChek Advances Colonie Expansion, Bubbakoo’s Burritos Launches in Guilderland, and J. Crew Prepares Glenmont Opening

Commercial activity across New York's Capital Region is maintaining steady momentum as regional planning boards, national restaurant brands, and established clothing retailers advance their local development initiatives. From infrastructure approvals in Colonie to culinary launches in Guilderland and retail hiring in Glenmont, a series of new business milestones are reshaping the regional commercial landscape.

In the village of Colonie, local municipal officials have granted formal approval for a brand-new QuickChek convenience market and gas station. The Village of Colonie Planning Commission officially approved both the site plan and the necessary special use permit for the project earlier this month, clearing the regulatory path for the convenience chain to move forward.

The development is slated for 1850 Central Ave., a commercial parcel currently occupied by an active Walgreens pharmacy. Under the redevelopment strategy authorized by the board, the existing pharmacy building will be demolished to make way for the ground-up construction of the new gas station and convenience store.

Securing municipal authorization required navigating specific zoning considerations, primarily due to the proposed facility's proximity to an operational Mobil fueling station situated directly across the street. Because of the close distance between the two competing gas stations, developers were required to obtain a special use permit alongside a variance from the zoning board before receiving site plan clearance.

This newly approved Central Avenue store is part of a broader, aggressive regional push by the New Jersey-based chain. QuickChek, which currently oversees a retail network of more than 150 convenience stores across New York and New Jersey—including upwards of 12 locations throughout the Hudson Valley—is actively working toward debuting nine distinct locations across the Capital Region.

The Central Avenue location marks the second project in the village of Colonie to receive local approval this year. In May, municipal planners authorized another QuickChek at 32 Wolf Road on a property that previously housed a Bed Bath and Beyond. Construction is already underway at that site, and planning commission meeting records note that both the Wolf Road and Central Avenue stores will share a similar architectural design.

Meanwhile, the regional food and dining sector is seeing notable growth with the opening of a new Bubbakoo’s Burritos in Guilderland. The Mexican-fusion chain has established its newest storefront at 1704 Western Ave., situating the eatery close to the area's newly opened Costco wholesale location.

The Guilderland restaurant officially commenced operations on Sept. 3 and is gearing up for its formal grand opening celebration on the upcoming Wednesday. To commemorate the event, the business has arranged a special promotional giveaway, offering a full year’s supply of complimentary burritos to the first 50 guests who arrive in line.

Alongside its staple menu of Mexican-fusion offerings, the Western Avenue establishment is featuring newly added seasonal items for the fall. Customers visiting the location this month can order several new specialty options, including fried cauliflower and dessert-focused apple pie egg rolls.

The Guilderland franchise is owned and operated by business partners Anuj Patel and Shreyansh Patel, with daily restaurant operations supported by staff members including Emilio Perez. In discussing the opening, Anuj Patel noted that the brand's distinct flavor variety, fresh ingredient lineup, and customer-driven meal customization made it an attractive fit for the local community.

Patel emphasized that the surrounding Albany area provides a well-balanced market for the concept, highlighting a strong local demographic blend composed of families, area college students, and working professionals. Ownership aims to establish the Western Avenue venue as a welcoming gathering spot where community members can assemble and enjoy customized meals.

The Guilderland site represents the second Capital Region venture for Bubbakoo's Burritos, building on the brand's regional debut in 2023 at 26 North Greenbush Road in Troy. On a national level, the rapidly growing fast-casual franchise continues to broaden its footprint, currently operating more than 140 locations distributed across 17 states.

At the same time, regional retail centers are preparing for new tenant arrivals, highlighted by progress on the forthcoming J. Crew Factory outlet in Glenmont Plaza. The apparel store is slated to open its doors to local shoppers this fall, bringing the national clothing brand directly to the Glenmont shopping corridor.

Preparations for the retail launch are actively advancing as the company begins staffing operations for the new store. Current job postings for the Glenmont Plaza location show active recruitment across multiple staffing tiers, including positions for sales associates, assistant store managers, and a store director.

The upcoming addition of J. Crew Factory continues an ongoing wave of commercial leasing activity within Glenmont Plaza, which also recently welcomed a new Trader location. Together with the convenience store approvals in Colonie and restaurant debuts in Guilderland, the latest round of openings underscores ongoing business investment across diverse sectors of the Capital Region economy.
